Lady Gaga has been denied a permit to play a show at SXSW in Austin, Texas next month.
Austin 360 reports Don Pitts, manager of the City of Austin Music & Entertainment division – the office that issues permits for all official and unofficial South by Southwest events –confirmed Tuesday night that a permit request for Lady Gaga to play the Doritos Stage in the parking lot of Carmelo’s Italian Restaurant at SXSW 2014 was denied.
"Our conclusion was based primarily on public safety concerns," said Pitts. "We look at the size and capacity of the location covered by the permit being sought and how it fits with the anticipated attendance, based on event capacity and promotion. At the end of the day, it’s a parking lot."
SXSW runs March 7 – 16 and Gaga may still be able to play the event, after all.
"We informed the applicant that we would support relocation to an established venue with the necessary permanent infrastructure," added Pitts.
An update on the story by music industry magazine Billboard reports a source familiar with the event said that Lady Gaga is expected to perform in some capacity and that an official announcement will come soon.
In support of her new album, “ARTPOP”, Gaga will play a series of seven shows at New York’s Roseland Ballroom starting March 28
