The singer’s team released a statement Friday, saying “It is with deep regret that [Adele] has been forced to cancel her remaining live dates and promotional appearances in 2011. She is to undergo surgery to alleviate the current issues with her throat and a full recovery is expected. As a result, doctors have ordered her to rest her voice and completely recuperate before looking to schedule any work commitments.”
According to a post Adele wrote earlier this month, she has been suffering voice issues on and off since getting a flu bug last December; she followed doctor’s orders and things seemed to be on the mend, but in the middle of a spring US tour her voice went out completely.
“I was in Minneapolis, about half way through the tour,” she wrote. “I made a Skype call in the morning on the day of the show and, during it, my voice suddenly switched off like a light! It was literally as if someone pulled a curtain over my throat.”
Adele cancelled the show, went on and performed in Denver, where she basically blew out her throat, later diagnosed as a haemorrhage.
A respiratory and chest infection followed in the fall, as if she just couldn’t shake a bug that refused to go away, causing more problems and doctor’s orders to rest. “I have absolutely no choice but to recuperate properly and fully, or I risk damaging my voice forever.”
Earlier this month, Adele cancelled a 10-date US tour after being diagnosed with a vocal cord haemorrhage, her second this year. Also now scrapped is a 6-date UK tour that was set for November; that trip was originally planned for September, but postponed after the singer suffered from a severe cold and chest infection.
Fans can still enjoy some live Adele – on tape – when she releases “Live At The Royal Albert Hall" on DVD and Blu-ray on November 29.
As for the cancelled shows, ticket holders will receive a refund from the point of purchase.
